Steam Plant Issues

Steam Plant Issues

The main factors affecting the efficiency of steam plants are scale, corrosion, fouling and foaming. Scale is undesirable in water systems since it coats the inside of piping and acts as an insulator. If left untreated it can lead to blockages and system shut down.

The objectives of water treatment are:

  1. To contribute to the overall safety of operation of the boiler or water heater.
  2. To assist in the maintenance of high heat transfer efficiency within the boiler or water heater by:
    • Preventing deposition of precipitous scale or other debris
    • Preventing corrosion or deterioration of surfaces in contact with water
  3. To maintain the quality of any generated steam or hot water, appropriate to the application.

Influencing Factors

Factors influencing the type of water treatment necessary to meet the feed water quality requirements are:

The characteristics, relative proportions and cost of make up water, condensate and other process water that can comprise feed water The capacity and characteristics of any existing water treatment facilities and procedures The balance between capital and operating costs of any proposed water treatment plant or procedure, including the effect of energy costs

Advanced Water Technologies engineers will consider these factors in the preparation of a treatment proposal after close discussion with the client.

The water treatment process, except for closed circuit water systems, usually involves two distinct elements.

External treatment which is concerned primarily with the removal of undesirable constituents.

Advanced Water Technologies can design, provide, install and service a wide variety of external conditioning equipment such as:

Advanced Water Technologies engineers, in making any particular recommendations, will always provide a balanced financial overview of the capital cost of any particular plant versus the ongoing savings in operational costs.

Internal treatment where chemical additions are made to the feed water, boiler water and steam in order to confer desirable attributes or to react with traces of undesirable constituents which can remain after external treatment.

Advanced Water Technologies engineers, when making recommendations, will invariably use the BS2486 guidelines. However, we have the expertise and flexibility to tailor make a treatment programme to a clients unique specification.

Chlorination Services

Water supply companies have their own strict requirements for disinfection work on public mains and will refuse to connect newly laid mains supply pipes into their network until disinfection has been carried out. Advanced Water Technologies are experts in best operating practices to meet and exceed the requirements of all UK water providers for water disinfection services.

In general whenever a system has been breached for repair, renewal or refurbishment there is a possibility of contamination and as such there is a legal requirement for disinfection.

How We Can Help

Advanced Water Technologies have a team of highly qualified and experienced chlorination engineers, all of whom have achieved training to meet all the water supply companies standards, British Standards and HSE guidance. We have dedicated vehicles, equipment and our own customised dosing systems.
